Before / After

Hooked on Houses is hosting her "Hooked on Fridays" blog party; I hope y'all will click here and have look. This week I'm hooked on the change to our house. This is just a taste. You can make each picture bigger: Click the picture and select "all sizes." I'm also participating in my first Metamorphosis Monday at Between Naps on the Porch! Hope I'm doing it right.

The neighborhood, Morningside, had been down and was coming back. It's a post-war minimal traditional built in 1950. The first owners enclosed the porch, added a laundry room / workshop and raised 3 children. I was raised in a house almost exactly like this.

We bought it in 1977. We stared having our children in 1983. In 1988 Bill Harrison, a friend from my Georgia Tech days and Gordon Stringer, a local designer began to transform our house.

Here is the east facade from the Rock Creek ravine. Very tough to get a picture from down here.

The north facade didn't change much but we got a great elevated porch and good place for parties.

Gordon told us to paint the ceiling blue. We did and the porch went from feeling too high to feeling cozy.

As many pictures as I've taken, a post like this make me realize that I haven't taken nearly enough.

You can see some of the insides here.

Thanks to Metamorphosis Monday at Between Naps on the Porch.

And thanks to Hooked on Houses.

  6. Well, you certainly know how to pick friends - William Harrison!?! Wow. Morningside is a great neighborhood. Your house looks great - and I love painted brick. Thanks for the pictures.

  9. The front entry is what calls to me. You look at the house, and they eye is immediately drawn to it. It is a beautiful and welcoming focal point to your home.

I smiled when I saw your lot - someone commented on my last post that they did not know Atlanta was hilly. Your lot is like so many I have seen in the last few months (looking at lots) - you kind of get a tree house feel on one side of your house (which I love - looking out into the trees), and yet it looks like you have a great level front yard, and a great flat back yard. The best of all worlds!

I love the transformation. Thanks for posting this! You should also post it on the Monday (Sunday evening) Between Naps on the Porch Metamorphosis Monday. That group loves a good transformation!

  10. So, GA TECH? My Dad too. NASA engineer, age 74, working full time. Still in Mission Control during flights. Now they have MER, Mission Evaluation Room, too. Hence my engineering degree & loving to build things.

Love, love, love what you've done with your house.

  11. My daughter #1 went to Ga Tech as well. It remains a hard place.

  12. Looks to me that you took an ordinary house with good bones and made it your own, thereby improving ten times over. Looks like you've had a lot of good years there and a lot of good memories!

  13. At the end everybody agreed they should have torn it down. And it probably wasn't the most profitable way to invest at the time. But the house is in a great neighborhood, with the best public schools, it's the last house on a rare cul de sac with a bit of open space to the east.

  23. Whoa Terry! Your house is stunning -- what a difference from when you bought it!

LOVE the entrance... a turret! How romantic. I don't know how you got down that ravine to take the other pictures, but I'm glad you did -- what a fantastic setting. It's beautiful!

Love the blue porch ceiling --there's an old superstition that if you paint porch ceilings blue, the flies will leave you alone. Don't know if it's true, but I do know there are lots of blue ceilings around!

(And I wouldn't change my girls for anything! They continue to make me laugh, and thankfully are costing less money the older they get!)

  24. The flies don't leave us alone but we do have screens. We have 3 painted ceilings, this one. Our big room has Benjamin Moore 834 "Bright and Early" but it could be better. One of our bedrooms is Benjamin Moore 675 "Thunderbird" which, in context, rocks the whole world.

  30. Hi Terry,
What wonderful transformations! I love the stone so much and the beautiful blue in the ceiling! Thanks for your comments, my hubby is a building construction teacher @ our local high school and when he is off in the summer he is doing just one project after another ( and for others too) I need a nap just to keep up with him, Cindy @ Applestone Cottage
